XWiki Overview

What is XWiki?

XWiki is a robust open-source collaborative platform designed to enhance efficiency and streamline communication for companies of all sizes. By organizing knowledge effectively, XWiki reduces organizational silos and ensures that critical information is always accessible. This enhances collaboration at both team and organizational levels, preventing email overload and the loss of important knowledge when employees leave. As an adaptable and versatile alternative to proprietary knowledge bases, XWiki offers over 900 pre-made extensions and applications. These features allow businesses to customize and extend their wiki capabilities as needed, making it one of the most flexible collaborative platforms available. The platform's structured design simplifies the process of managing information, with tools like faceted search and pre-built templates, ensuring consistent documentation and reducing the time spent searching for information. XWiki provides transparent pricing models for both cloud and on-premises deployments, including special discounts for NGOs, open-source projects, and educational institutions. This scalability, combined with powerful features, makes it an excellent choice for any organization. The platform supports full customization through its extensive range of extensions, applications, macros, skins, and plugins. Whether a business requires a cloud-based solution or an on-premises deployment, XWiki can be tailored to meet specific needs. Developed with input from a community of experienced and passionate developers, XWiki is continuously advancing, ensuring compatibility, security, and high performance. Privacy and security are prioritized, with features that protect personal files and securely encrypt all login credentials. The platform's complex rights management allows differentiated access on a user basis, and a superadmin account ensures full access for the rightful owner. A standout feature of XWiki is the new Confluence Migration Toolkit, which supports three heavily requested bridge macros: Page Properties, Page Properties Report, and Content by Label. These macros use Confluence's Query Language (CQL), enabling XWiki to interpret queries created in Confluence. This ensures a seamless transition for businesses migrating from Confluence, preserving existing workflows and data structures. XWiki offers more than just software; it fosters a collaborative culture. The platform provides all the tools necessary for effective communication and teamwork, helping organizations break down silos and enhance internal knowledge sharing. By enabling fast and efficient access to critical information, XWiki helps businesses save time and reduce operational costs. Additionally, XWiki ensures ethical software use by providing an open-source option that eliminates vendor lock-in. This commitment to open-source principles guarantees that businesses retain full control over their software and data. A dedicated human support team backs XWiki, offering tailored solutions to meet custom requirements. This personalized support ensures that businesses can fully leverage the platform's capabilities to achieve their collaboration and knowledge management goals. In summary, XWiki is a comprehensive, flexible, and secure open-source platform designed for modern businesses. Its extensive customization options, robust security features, and supportive community make it an ideal choice for enhancing collaboration and knowledge management. Whether deployed in the cloud or on-premises, XWiki offers a scalable solution that grows with businesses, fostering a more connected and productive work environment.

What do you like best about XWiki?

XWiki is not just a wiki, it is a extensible development platform to build online collaborative tools. But you don't need to be a developer to start using it, and even to develop small applications. And best of all, it is open source and therefore freely accessible. With tons of extensions and growing, you can customize XWiki to really match your specific needs. We use it to create public WebSite that display business information, and we provide the backend to manage the data on the exact same platform. One tool for managing, organising collaborating and sharing information. Compare to other collaborative platform, we have chosen XWiki because it is open source, and it provide full flexibility. Seeing some of our work, you cannot easily know that XWiki is behind, so much it has been customised. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about XWiki?

The default UI still needs to be improved for better usability. Newcomers are sometime lost by the powerful features proposed, and developers by the myriad of API available. While you have the feeling that there is real intend to create the best collaboration tool, you sometime feel frustrated by some unexpected behaviours. This is probably the price for getting a tool that smart and very customisable. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering XWiki:

If you have information to organise and share, you should consider using XWiki in replacement to mail, office, and other complex workflow you are using today. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is XWiki solving and how is that benefiting you?

We provide collaborative online solution to our clients. We have therefore use XWiki as a base platform. Out of the box, it already provides useful feature to our customers, and it allow us to quickly craft a PoC to convince them to go further. By its customisability and the access to the source, we never reach a dead end and we are always able to provide a good solution for our customers needs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about XWiki?

This tool offers the possibility of adding new articles in an easy way. Also, it has lots of options for formatting text. For me, it is remarkable all Macros that it has. For example, it is really useful the 'Code' macro because allows us to add extracts of code that then it will be shown formatted perfectly. Another functionality that I like is the possibility of adding CSS styles to texts and components. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about XWiki?

In my opinion, it is a bit confuse the way that the hierarchy of the pages can be modified. Apart from this, the WYSIWYG does not work as good as I would like to. For instance, most of the time it is not possible to copy text in editor area when this tab is selected, so it is necessary to change to Source tab for doing it. This means that the process of writing, in some occasions, becomes tedious. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering XWiki:

It is a good tool for writing articles that need more options like adding extracts of code. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is XWiki solving and how is that benefiting you?

What do you like best about XWiki?

I like the provision of scripting in pages, plugins and the highly modular architecture. Also the WYSIWYG editor and the LDAP authentication are really amazing and keeps my tech team happy.

Built on the Java platform and open source modules from Apache. Uses HTML and web standards. WCAG compatible which are really nice.

Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about XWiki?

Nothing specific in terms of features that made me think XWiki stood out from the crowded collaboration space. No value proposition to bring me back to the product. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering XWiki:

This is a very crowded space for such technologies and there are various products in the market. Do choose the correct one according to the needs of the current team and looking at all future needs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is XWiki solving and how is that benefiting you?

The only possible benefit I tried looking at is that the product was free for me in the capacity that I used it in. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about XWiki?

Easiness of use and performance. At work, we're using it for knowledge transfer for several projects and it's showing quite good results. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about XWiki?

Maybe the fact that the hierarchy for pages is weird (maybe it's due to our config), but sometimes I would like to go directly to the project's page instead of the index.

Sometimes I get weird search results. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Powerful tool to manage your documents and procedures. We are also using it to enable collaboration within our company and to co-create and enrich documents.

The user interface could be improved but this has been polished in the newest versions of XWiki. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
