What do you like best about OpenText EnCase Information Assurance?

EnCase is a very effective and robust tool in the field of eDiscovery. We can see that almost 90% of the companies(eDiscovery) have licensed versions of the tool being used in their environment. This can be possible only if the tool gives desired results in minimum amount of time. It is one among the tools whose results are court admissible and are internationally accepted.

Coming to my opinion on the tool, it is very very simple to use and has almost everything required for analysis in a lot more organised manner. The Case Analyzer and EnScript is best part of it. Being a technical person I feel so happy about developing any EnScript I want for regular purpose. The case analyzer gives me a quick over view his/her activities, which in turn helps in making quick decision on deciding time factors for any project. EnCase is even able to handle almost all the encryption. The Reporting also fulfills basic reporting needs. All these resoans totally suported my decision in taking up EnCase Certification. I am really happy with the tool. Thanks to Guidance Software. These guys are amazing.

What do you dislike about OpenText EnCase Information Assurance?

Some parts which I would like to add in new versions can be

1) It should be able to support AD1 format of image as usually incident respondents take up FTK Imager for Imaging the collections.

2) It would be better if EnCase highlights the 'Bad Signature' files with some color coding, by default. Color coding can be used in many instances.

3) Creating local files in 'AppData' folder when EnCase Imager is used to for collections.

I hope they will be fixing these issues soon. I am delighted with tool and its performance. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is OpenText EnCase Information Assurance solving and how is that benefiting you?

Currently I am working for one among the Big Four in eDiscovery field.

I use EnCase in my day to day life.

Clients are very happy with the results we provide them using EnCase. I feel better because even client understand the language of eDiscovery such as image, MD5, EnCase verification error, etc while using EnCase. This vast is EnCase utilization.

What do you like best about OpenText EnCase Information Assurance?

I like the ability to gather information from multiple sources across the enterprise, including Sharepoint, local workstations, and file shares. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about OpenText EnCase Information Assurance?

Be very careful when setting up anything in the product (custodians, targets, collections, etc) as there is no easy way to remove or change them if you make a mistake. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering OpenText EnCase Information Assurance:

Make sure you have a solid understanding of your environment and a service account with administrative access for different systems. Run multiple test cases and iron out your process before trying to use the system in a live environment.

Make sure to incorporate QC into your process before kicking off collections. You can edit a collection right up until you start the job, but if there is a typo or you need to tweak your collection criteria, you will need to create a new collection and abandon the existing collection. You cannot delete the abandoned collection though, so your workspace can get cluttered if you have too many failed jobs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is OpenText EnCase Information Assurance solving and how is that benefiting you?

Large scale legal collections are much faster and easier to document in Encase eDiscovery than manually collecting everything with various other tools. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about OpenText EnCase Information Assurance?

Familiarity. It is easy for me to do what I need to do in a short amount of time because it is what I have used for the past 7 years.

Functionality. It can hit more of the shares that I want, and is only limited to our own network team's granted permissions, which means legal can bring the hammer down on the network team in order to get what we need. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about OpenText EnCase Information Assurance?

Software seems bloated at times, struggling to keep up with itself. I understand there is a large amount of data to process, but when there are PST files to process that are password protected, EnCase isn't smart enough to go ahead and remove the password or prompt for the password. Instead it dumps out Exception Lists.

Exception lists. The bane of everything EnCase. Exceptions for everything. Documentation of those exceptions often times takes the longest amount of time in the process before delivery. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering OpenText EnCase Information Assurance:

Do not install the latest version. They keep churning them out, but little things can and do break. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is OpenText EnCase Information Assurance solving and how is that benefiting you?

Litigation support and forensics work. The benefits are outstanding. Everyone seems to know how to work Guidance's software. It can chew through large chunks of data and not die completely - instead it has mini strokes which I've talked about before (being the exception reports). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about OpenText EnCase Information Assurance?

There are many things to like about the tool. It is fairly easy to learn with a fairly intuitive interface. The treelike structure of display of a device is pretty simple, and a lot of the common used items are easily accessible off of the main page. It is easy to deploy servlets in enterprise mode. It is easy to grab and analyze information. There is also a built in "community" of experts and users that are more than willing to help you out as needed. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about OpenText EnCase Information Assurance?

In the past you had to rely on user created EnScripts to do certain things that you needed to do. That has gotten better and there are more built in functionalities with the newer versions. To fully understand how to use the tool to its ability it does require quite a bit of time, training, reading, and studying - although I am guessing that is the case with most forensics tools. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering OpenText EnCase Information Assurance:

I would definitely evaluate the rest of the competition, but overall still believe that EnCase is the top tool out there. Others have duplicated and tried to make it easier to use from what I have seen in demos, etc. but if you want the standard bearer, and have a little bit of budget to spend, you can't go wrong with this - it is basically the godfather of computer forensics in my opinion, and over the years has remained relevant and is still one of the top dogs. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is OpenText EnCase Information Assurance solving and how is that benefiting you?

We use it for simple gathering of information when people exit the company to package up for their former leader. We also use it to capture information (entire devices or keyword searched devices) in the event of a legal situation. We are able to conduct full legal holds without outside help with the use of this tool, which saves quite a bit of money. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you like best about OpenText EnCase Information Assurance?

Overall features of the program all for fast and accurate collection from a corporate network. The ability to collect from multiple sources such as SAFE, folders, Email (exchange, O365, POP, etc), and cloud drives. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What do you dislike about OpenText EnCase Information Assurance?

IT does have limited O365 abilities in its current version, but an update is promised. Also, there are some areas where editing or deleting the collection would be beneficial without affecting the back end database. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering OpenText EnCase Information Assurance:

This is a great tool to collect data across an enterprise organization. Compared to other tools, ECC is more user friendly. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is OpenText EnCase Information Assurance solving and how is that benefiting you?

The biggest benefit is toe ability to collect data from a machine with a SAFE collection. This allows the job to restart until the collection completes. This is helpful if the user is VPN and not always online. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Doesn't support popular Linux filesystems like XFS that is now the default on CentOS installs (X-Ways does). Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering OpenText EnCase Information Assurance:

It seems like Guidance is heading the "end point" direction, which would be more applicable for a large enterprise, not one off digital forensics. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

What problems is OpenText EnCase Information Assurance solving and how is that benefiting you?

What do you dislike about OpenText EnCase Information Assurance?

The interface could use some work there is lots of little things that have to be clicked to get things to work. In the past version it was not so cumbersome. Some times the speed of processing is a bit slow. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.

Recommendations to others considering OpenText EnCase Information Assurance:

Encase is a solid platform the version 7 across the board was a tough transition. i still find the older version, easier to get quick answers with. The interface is just not as intuitive and doesn't have easy ways to look at data related to the data you are viewing Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
