Social media monitoring refers to software designed for marketing departments and organizations to listen to social media platforms. Marketing departments, agencies, and consultants benefit by being alerted to keyword usage, being able to respond to customer inquiries instantly, and understanding customer sentiment as it relates to their own and competitors’ brands. Social media monitoring tools have grown in recent years from purely offering listening features to include rich analytics, dashboard creation, and powerful queries with semantic analysis.
The Grid represents the democratic voice of real software users, rather than the subjective opinion of one analyst. G2 Crowd rates social media monitoring products algorithmically based on data sourced from product reviews shared by G2 Crowd users and data aggregated from online sources and social networks.
Technology buyers can use the Grid to help them quickly select the best social media monitoring product for their business and to find peers with similar experiences. For vendors, media, investors, and analysts, the Grid provides benchmarks for product comparison and market trend analysis.
G2 Crowd rates products and vendors based on ratings and reviews gathered from our user community, as well as data aggregated from online sources and social networks. We apply a unique, patent-pending algorithm to this data to calculate the product strength and vendor market presence scores in real time.
The satisfaction rating is affected by the following (in order of importance):
The market presence score is affected by the following (in order of importance):
The ratings in this report are based on a snapshot of the user reviews and social data collected by G2 Crowd up to February 20, 2015. The ratings may change as the products are further developed, the vendors grow, and as additional opinions are shared by users. G2 Crowd updates the ratings on its website in real-time as additional data is received, and we will update this report at least twice per year. By improving their products and support and/or by having more satisfied customer voices heard, contenders may become leaders and niche vendors may become high performers.
Keeping our ratings unbiased is our top priority. We require the use of a LinkedIn account to validate a G2 Crowd user’s identity and employer and verify all reviews manually. We do not allow users to rate their employer’s products or those of their employer’s competitors. Though we share reviews from business partners (they often contain valuable content), we filter out business partner ratings in our aggregate ratings to avoid bias.
Our G2 Crowd staff does not add any subjective input to the ratings, which are determined algorithmically based on data aggregated from publicly available online sources and social networks. Vendors cannot influence their ratings by spending time or money with us. Only the opinion of real users and data from public sources factor into the ratings.
All products in a G2 Crowd category that have at least 10 reviews from real users of the product will be included in the Grid. Inviting other users, such as colleagues and peers to join G2 Crowd and share authentic product reviews will accelerate this process.
If a social media monitoring product is not yet listed on G2 Crowd and it fits the market definition above, then users are encouraged to suggest its addition to our Social Media Monitoring category.

With that said, reviewers mentioned that this simplicity does come at the cost of more advanced features, and they noted that Mention's stats and reporting feature could be improved to include more advanced options.

It is up to the user to train the tool as to what is pertinent and what is irrelevant, and this is a particular issue with companies that have a common name. Users recommended diligence when setting up keywords and terms to avoid in order to smoothen the machine learning process. A handful of reviewers also suggested that an upgraded version is needed to see real value; according to them, while the free version gives a glimpse of the platform’s capabilities, the number of allowed mentions is simply too low to use the tool effectively.

G2 Crowd asked industry experts to share their insights on the current state of the Social Media Monitoring market.
On what major criteria should a buyer assess social media monitoring solutions?
Response provided by: Joe Colacurcio, Director, Research & Analytics at Zocalo Group
First and most importantly, brands and agencies need to define a primary objective for the social media monitoring platform. For example, are community management and owned channel analysis the primary goal, or is wider-encompassing earned conversation listening the main objective? While most platforms can do many types of monitoring, core proficiency is usually focused in one area vs. another.
Broadly, though, brands and agencies should consider tools that cover a wide range of social platforms, and should consider tools that have a history quickly adding functionality as soon as APIs become available. Further, platforms that have a history of innovation and providing new ways to look at data should be considered above others.
Response provided by: Katie Kendall, Enterprise Social Monitoring Manager, Customer Care Operations at Walgreens
The biggest criteria is a tool that can scale with not only the volume of your brand mentions, but also be a good partner in your monitoring strategy. I think account management that comes with the solution is something to factor into the decision. Sometimes it's good to have the tool administrators there in your corner when you need them.
Response provided by: David Jones, Principal at Social Lab Group
Social media management platform providers are trying to add additional value to their platforms by offering a number of new functionality, such as: 1) Publishing to new platforms such as LinkedIn Company Pages, Google+ Business Pages, etc., 2) Providing suggested content to make it easier to curate and publish content on a regular basis, 3) Schedule algorithms to allow you to schedule posts to go out automatically at optimal times, and 4) Deeper analytics.
What major trends do you see in the social media monitoring space right now?
Response provided by: Katie Kendall, Enterprise Social Monitoring Manager, Customer Care Operations at Walgreens
Automation and alerts to help off duty monitoring is becoming more of a highlight in monitoring tools. I've also seen recently added workflow within publishing to track and help teams create content that's optimal based on how the audience reacts to it..
Response provided by: David Jones, Principal at Social Lab Group
It's a fairly mature space, but there's more work being done on truly understanding sentiment and emotion in a more granular way. I've also seen tech that is able to extract ethnicity from avatars and others that are able to match social profiles to customer databases with good accuracy.
Suffice to say that all the things you've thought were limited about social media monitoring solutions are being worked on and solved as you read this.
Response provided by: Joe Colacurcio, Director, Research & Analytics at Zocalo Group
I think social listening tools in particular are trying to excel at one of three functional areas: providing the best coverage and collecting the most content possible across all social channels via their APIs (thin full Twitter firehose), creating really beautiful and compelling visuals that can be easily created and shared, and using advanced language processing to parse sentiment and other hard to qualitative information. It feels rare that a single tool does all of these three things really well. Some of the more innovative features that are starting to emerge include conversation segmentation as well as more advance conversation discovery.
Outside of this, and speaking to an earlier point about tools that excel at certain goals, moving forward the best social tools are going to need to help marketers understand the linkage between owned channels/community management and earned conversations - not just what is taking place in each arena by itself.
How do these trends and the direction the industry is moving toward affect companies using and evaluating social media monitoring solutions now?
Response provided by: Evan Dunn, Digital Marketing Practice Lead at Transform (formerly OneAccord Digital)
The goal, as with any software adoption process, is to seamlessly integrate as few tools as possible to solve the highest percentage of core business problems, catalyze the generation of the largest amount of revenue, and pay the lowest premium.
Because of the smoke and mirrors around capabilities of the different tools, buyers should ask to speak both to the CEO (to get a sense of the product direction) and the lead engineer (to grill with questions on capabilities). Be aware that big kahunas like to buy their way through the space, leaving you with unintegrated options that still manage to cost an arm and a leg.
Response provided by: Joe Colacurcio, Director, Research & Analytics at Zocalo Group
For companies considering social monitoring platforms, considerations on costs, accuracy, and the speed to the RIGHT insight are paramount. As marketers, we face the need to find the tools that will help us accurately find answers to our social media questions, most often, and most quickly. As our digital and social landscape continues to grow, monitoring tools becoming a bigger input of marketing budgets. Using them efficiently and being able to quickly produce insights, alongside an impactful visuals is really important in proving the worth of the tools.
Response provided by: David Jones, Principal at Social Lab Group
My advice is to never settle for the solution you have. Continually evaluate every new player and compare the features, pricing, flexibility against what you're using now. Keep an active list of features you absolutely need and others that you hope to see and seek out monitoring platforms that deliver on them.
